Class Expectations
Grading Scale and Assignments
Students enrolled in the Cane Bay Middle Choir will have very high expectations inside and outside of the classroom. This Choir will have several performance opportunities and therefore will be held to high standard as representatives of the Cane Bay Community. Students will be respectful in class, keep phones in their bags, and sing to the best of their ability. They will also refrain from talking which the teacher is talking and give 100% of their attention to the subject and task at hand. Students are required to have their chorus binder, a pencil, and their chromebook at every class or points will be deducted. Students are also encouraged to bring a water bottle!
45%- Major Assessments (Concerts, Composer of the Month)
35%- Minor Assessments (Dress Rehearsals, Quizzes)
15%- In Class Practice (Sight Singing, Group Work)
10%- Out of Class Practice (Part Test, Homework)
One consistent assignment students will be responsible for will be the Composer of the Month Assignment. This assignment varies month to month but students will have one month (with the exception of August and December) to finish the assignment. It is assigned on the first A/B Day of the month and due the last.
Students should also be aware there will be Part Tests where students will be expected to record their part and submit it via google classroom for a completion grade OR in person for Mrs. Hardwick. These will be used to help Mrs. Hardwick hear progress from individual students and be able to gear class time to work on specific needs of all students. Any students who do not have access to internet/computers at home may use class time to complete assignments if Mrs. Hardwick is informed before the due date of the project or assignment. All Assignments can be found on google classroom. Students and parents are also reminded that Dress Rehearsals for Concerts and the Concerts themselves are a part of the student's grade.

Are all events mandatory?
Most events are necessary but not all! There are different expectations for different groups, and information will be provided on what is required for a grade and what is not. This will also be sent out in the monthly newsletter. In the calendar above, the dates with a * are mandatory for the grade level listed.
What if I cannot attend an event?
Because we all have busy lives things come up, and that's ok! A parent note giving at least 2 weeks notice will allow the student to miss the event and complete an alternate assignment for credit. All that is asked is that parents and students remember that concerts are a culmination of all of the work we have done in class and dress rehearsals are vital for all students to get a feel of how the concert will go. If one student misses, it is very difficult on the group in both instances. If no prior notice is given the student will receive a 0 for the event and will be given an alternate assignment where the highest grade that can be received is a 70 as stated in the CBM handbook.
Concert Attire
5/6th Grade Chorus
All Black
- Black Shirt (Must have sleeves, even if they are short sleeves)
- Black Pants/Floor Length Black Skirt/Dress
- Black, Close Toed Dress Shoes (no Tennis Shoes!)
7/8th Grade Honors and Advanced Chorus
Formal Concert Attire
For uniformity, students will be expected to purchase either a chorus dress or an all black shirt/slacks option with tie. Attire will be purchased through Mrs. Hardwick and will be worn both their 7th and 8th grade years. If students leave chorus or outgrow their concert attire, it can be sold back to the CBM Chorus. Students can attend Dress Fit and Swap on August 24th to try on sample sizes and be measured for their attire. Attire is $60 per student. Fundraising opportunities are available as well as payment plans and temporary rental from CBM for a lower cost, but rental attire is limited so it is first come, first serve. Students who commit to paying for a dress in full or fundraise for it that do not provide the appropriate funds before the end of 2019 will not be able to receive their report cards until the attire is paid for in full.
